• Identify a typical polymer molecule in terms of its chain structure • Define the characteristics of thermoplastic and thermosetting polymers • Assess polymer responses and behaviours under different mechanical and thermal loadings • Report various types of additives and their effects • Characterize and evaluate key properties of polymers • Establish structure-property relationship of polymers • Prescribe and explain the roles of matrix and reinforcement in composites, and list five interfacial adhesion mechanisms between the matrix and fibre reinforcement • Prescribe and explain theory of fibre critical length, rule of mixtures and methodology of composite design • Prescribe and explain key properties for biopolymers and biocomposites • Design and select composite material system based on properties requirements • Prescribe and explain the principles of finite element method and its general application in structural and stress analysis • Prescribe and explain the mechanics and failure criteria applied in finite element method for the analysis of polymers • Prescribe and explain the mechanics and failure criteria applied in finite element method for the analysis of fibre reinforced polymer composites • Prescribe and explain methods to apply external loads, to design joints and to utilize design possibilities with fibre reinforced polymer composites • Use finite element software to obtain the stress state in a composite product in service and optimize the fibre reinforced polymer composite design
