About this Course
The aim of the Diploma programme is to ensure that students gain a working knowledge of the environment of a foundation programme in Fashion Design and Marketing.
Students will gain sufficient knowledge and confidence as the programme guides them through the core values and language of design and marketing with a focus on innovation, creativity and business acumen. Students will be taught to further explore methods and materials, processes and approaches, possibilities and potential within a creative and academic environment. A deliberate feature of the programme is for students to engage in experiential learning through a range of pedagogies that include field trips, industry collaborations and listening to guest speakers. Students may incorporate these findings into their projects.
Through this, the students will understand a variety of approaches and open methodologies needed within the foundation studies, to provide the necessary skills and knowledge to create a portfolio of work which will help them progress further to the BA Honours programmes.
Course Curriculum
Design Principles
The objective of this module is to develop student observation and visual appreciation skills. Students will learn how to explain their design ideas through illustration and flat technical drawing. They will develop practical colouring skills to render different textile textures and patterns. Students will record the design process through the sketchbook, using various media and techniques.
Patternmaking and Production
The aim of this module is to allow students to transform their sketches into wearable dresses. Students will learn elementary patternmaking principles and methods for women wear. They will familiarize with basic production techniques, including fabric cutting and manipulation, sewing, and finishing.
Fashion History and Culture
This module intends to situate fashion in a broader historical and cultural context. Students will investigate how different social, national, ethnic and gender factors affect the way individuals and groups construct and project their identities through their dress. They will be introduced to a range of research approaches to improve their communication skills.
Fashion Marketing and Merchandising
This modules aims to provide the necessary understanding of the fashion industry. Students will practice essential market research skills to analyse consumer behaviour and forecast future trends. They will study key merchandising, marketing, branding and promotion principles to develop original strategies and tactics.
Fashion Experimentation
The objective of this module is to nurture student creativity through the exploration of mix media. Students will discover various material manipulation and decoration methods. They will gain visual communication skills to communicate their unique ideas through compelling mood-boards and presentations
Design Development
This module combines the visual, cultural, production and business knowledge into a single package. Students will go through the whole design development process – from the conceptualization stage to the creation of original outfits. They will refine their production skills and develop their own portfolio.
Entry Requirements
Applicants must be of age 16 and above, and meet at least one of the following requirements:
- Grade D or Grade 5 in any 3 GCE N Level subjects with one year of related working experience or
- Grade C6 in any 2 GCE O Level subjects or
- NITEC (in Fashion Apparel Production & Design, Visual Communication, Product Design, Retail Services may have up to 2 modules exemption) or
- Higher NITEC (in Visual Merchandising and in Retail Merchandising may have up to 2 modules exemption)
Additional requirements:
- All applicants must possess a minimum C6 grade in English Language (EL1) at GCE ‘O’ Levels;
- Pass the English Entrance Test conducted by MDIS;
- A minimum score of 6.0 in the IELTS (International English Language Testing System);
- A minimum score of 550 points (Paper-based) or 213 points (Computer-based) or 79 points (Internet-based) in the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language);
- Pass the Advanced Level of MDIS Professional Certificate in English (PCIE);
