About this Course

Certificate in Early Years Curriculum (Semester 4) Module Synopsis The Child and the Creative Curriculum This module introduces participants to the expressive arts for young children. These include the visual arts, music and movement and singing. Theories related to creative and aesthetic development will help participants understand the rationale for arts-based integrated approaches to learning for young children. Analysis of children’s drawing and mark making will also be introduced for participants to gain insights to children’s thinking and understanding of their world. Lesson planning and assessment for young children will also be covered. The Child and the Inquiry Curriculum This module examines the principles and concepts which underpin young children’s inquiry. Participants will be introduced to the knowledge and skills required to plan, implement and evaluate learning experiences in mathematics in early childhood settings. Participants will learn how to use appropriate materials, resources and space and information technology in designing developmentally appropriate activities for young children with a diverse range of needs in a multi-cultural, multi lingual society. Social Studies in Early Education This module aims to equip participants with the essential knowledge, skills and dispositions in order to empower young children to become socially competent citizens of the global community. Participants will explore children’s thinking, understanding and learning of history, geography, economics, and most importantly, environmental and social awareness. Planning and teaching of developmentally and culturally appropriate social studies experiences will be included. Practicum (III) This module aims to extend participants’ competence in relation to practical aspects of working with young children in early childhood settings. The practicum will give opportunities for participants to plan and implement learning experiences for a large group of children. Both structured and unstructured learning experiences will be designed with the aim to enhance and challenge children’s desire to explore and discover in an environment that supports the creative curriculum. Participants will practice developmentally appropriate behaviour management strategies taking into consideration the learning environment of the setting.
